SPRINGFIELD - The Junior League of Springfield (JLS) invites area children ages 5-12 to participate in its 2012 Kids in the Kitchen (KITK) event on Saturday, February 25, 2012. In partnership with the Springfield YMCA, Lincoln Land Community College, and SIU School of Medicine, this FREE event will be held from 10:00-11:30am in the Student Union of Menard Hall on Lincoln Land Community College's campus. Pre- registration is required. Parents/guardians may obtain registration forms at http://www.jlsil.org by ca,lling 544.5557, or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. Space is limited to the first 100 children ages 5-12 who pre-register.
There will be a variety of fun workstations that offer information about nutrition and fitness. Together with their children, parents will be able to participate in the hip-hop fitness activity from the YMCA. Kids will have the chance to taste test a variety of food items, make a healthy snack, and learn how to make better choices about what they eat, among other topics, through a variety of hands-on activities. It is recommended that children come dressed in appropriate attire for exercising. “The goal of this free event is to educate youth on how to make healthy lifestyle choices, and in turn reverse the growth of childhood obesity and its associated health issues,” says KITK Chair Amanda Eichholz. “Kids will discover that just because a food is good for them does not mean it will taste bad and there are lots of possibilities to prepare healthy meals and make healthy food choices.”
