JLS In Action
Kitchens in Bloom Home Tour
JLS held its annual Kitchens in Bloom Home Tour on May 5, 2013. This year the tour featured five homes in the Washington Park area. The tour allowed attendees to tour each of the five homes, and while the tour focused primarily on kitchens, many of the homeowners opened their entire homes for the event. This is JLS’s largest fundraising event of the year.
JLS appreciates the support from the following sponsors: US Marble & Granite, WC Media, BJ Grand Salon & Spa, Capital Group Kitchen and Bath Design, Center, Sexton’s Landscape Concepts, The Closet Guy, James Lesniak and Company Title Insurance, Andiamo, Design with Kelli, Marine Bank, Homescapes, Fox Audio Visual, Heartland Credit Union, Troxell Financial Advisors, Springfield Section of AIA, Karen Kloppe, Michael von Behren Builder, Inc., S&K Pontiac GMC, Security Bank, United Community Bank, Greenview Nursery, Food Fantasies, Augie’s Front Burner, Springfield Park District, Vono Medical Supplies, Daniel and Renee Clausner, Whimsies & Notions/Sprout Fitters, Corkscrew Wine Emporium, Talbots, Apricot Lane, The Wardrobe, Prairie Dental Group, Robert’s Seafood, and Pease’s Candy
Kids in the Kitchen
On April 20, 2013, we held Kids in the Kitchen at the Dove Conference Center at St. John’s Prarie Heart Institute. This is an annual event for JLS. It is a free event open to students ages 5 to 10. The afternoon included lessons on healthy food & lifestyle choices and a chance to try out some simple recipes through hands-on activities. The Kids in the Kitchen event was started by the Association of Junior Leagues International in 2006 in a nationwide effort to combat childhood obesity, and other related health concerns, through education. This year JLS expanded their program to include lessons on healthy snacks, basic cooking safety and fun exercise ideas. During the children’s lessons we also held an information session for the parents about healthy food choices for children and what area organizations had to offer families who want to involve their children in healthy extracurricular activities.
Prom It Forward
On March 23, 2013, at the YMCA Downtown, JLS (along with the YMCA and Kari Bedford Photography) hosted every girl’s dream for the perfect prom, especially those in need of a dress who could not afford to purchase their own. JLS provided the opportunity to choose from a collection of gently used gowns. The event also included door prizes, health and beauty inspiration, picture perfect tips, prom vendors and accessories.
Each winter, Junior League of Springfield holds a literacy fair at the Lincoln Library downtown to encourage literacy-based activities among families. This year our theme was Healthy Literacy!
